Black Water Rafting, Compared

The underground river you look down at from the Glowworm Caves boat is the same water people float down on an inner tube, in a wetsuit, in the dark. That is black water rafting, and it is the reason a lot of people who thought Waitomo was a 45-minute stop end up spending a day there.

Black Labyrinth — 3 hours

The standard version. You are fitted with a wetsuit, boots and a helmet lamp, walk into Ruakuri Cave, and float the river on a tube. The set piece is jumping backwards off a small waterfall into the dark, which sounds worse than it is — the drop is modest and the guides talk everyone through it.

The glowworm section is done with the lamps off, tubes linked, drifting under the larvae. It is the same species and the same cave system as the boat tour, seen from underneath and much closer, with a fraction of the people.

Black Abyss — 5 hours

The serious one. It opens with a 35-metre abseil into the cave, adds a flying fox in complete darkness, includes the tubing, and finishes by climbing two underground waterfalls to get out. Five hours door to door.

It costs roughly twice Labyrinth and is a genuinely different proposition — this is caving with a rope, not a float with a scare in the middle.

Which, honestly

Take Labyrinth if you are reasonably fit, can swim, and want the glowworms from the water without committing a whole day. It is the one to pick if you have never done anything like it.

Take Abyss if abseiling appeals in its own right. If the rope is the part you are unsure about, it is the wrong tour — the abseil is the first thing that happens, not an optional extra.

Take neither if you are cold-sensitive. The water is cold year-round, wetsuits help rather than solve, and three hours is long enough to feel it.

The logistics people get wrong

Black water rafting does not leave from the Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre. It departs from the Legendary Black Water Rafting Co. at 585 Waitomo Caves Rd, a different address entirely, and check-in is thirty minutes before departure. If you have booked a cave tour on the same day, build in the drive.
