Which Waitomo Cave Should You Actually Book?

Waitomo sells three guided show caves within a few minutes of each other, run by the same operator, and the pricing does not tell you which is which. Aranui Cave costs exactly the same as the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and has no glowworms in it.

That is the whole reason this page exists.

The short answer

First visit, limited time, or you want the photograph: the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, NZ$81, 45 minutes. The boat through the Glowworm Grotto is the thing Waitomo is famous for and nothing else substitutes for it.

You want to see glowworms properly rather than as a distant ceiling: Ruakuri Cave, NZ$116, 1.5 hours. Longer, quieter, glowworms at closer range, and the only one of the three with step-free entry.

You want limestone and solitude and do not care about glowworms: Aranui Cave, NZ$81, 1 hour. Genuinely lovely. Genuinely dark in the ordinary way.

Why Aranui has no glowworms

Glowworms are the larvae of Arachnocampa luminosa, a fungus gnat found only in New Zealand. The larvae hang sticky lines from a cave roof and glow to lure insects onto them, and the insects they eat hatch from water. No water, no insects, no reason for glowworms to live there.

Aranui has no stream running through it. That is also precisely why its formations are so intact and delicate, so the same fact that removes the glowworms is what makes the cave worth visiting on its own terms. It is not a lesser cave. It is a different one, sold under a name that makes people assume otherwise.

Glowworm Caves versus Ruakuri, if you only do one

They differ in posture more than in quality.

In the Glowworm Caves you walk through the dry upper chambers, including the tall space called the Cathedral, then board a boat and are pulled through the Grotto in silence. You are sitting, looking up, and the glowworms are a ceiling of them at some distance. It takes 45 minutes and about ten of those are the boat.

In Ruakuri you walk the whole way, entering by a large man-made spiral shaft that gets you underground without steps, and the route runs above an underground river with glowworms at arm’s reach in places. Ninety minutes, fewer people per group, and much better if you want to look at things rather than glide past them.

If you can do both, the combo at NZ$170 is how most people do it, and it is cheaper than the two separately.

What about the free option

There is no free way into any of the three caves. All are guided-access only, run by Discover Waitomo, who are both the commercial operator and kaitiaki of the system. The access limits are not purely commercial: glowworms respond to light, noise and exhaled carbon dioxide, which is why the boat is silent and why numbers are capped.

What is free is the Ruakuri Bush Walk, which runs above and around the cave system through native bush, past a natural tunnel and river. It is about an hour and costs nothing. It is a good addition, not a substitute.

The practical trap

Three tours, three check-in points. The Glowworm Caves depart from the Visitor Centre at 39 Waitomo Village Rd; Ruakuri checks in at the Ruakuri Visitor Centre on Tumutumu Rd; black water rafting goes from 585 Waitomo Caves Rd. Check-in is thirty minutes before departure for all of them, and if you have booked a combo you are driving between them.
